The following is a letter from John Blum of Bad Marha

To Bad Martha Customers,

I wanted to share the good news that our SBA PPP loan was approved by the federal government, allowing us to rehire our employees for an 8-week period beginning today.  We look forward to helping our employees with this low interest loan and are excited to be able to be open for expanded hours of operation with faster service as a consequence. We will be open 7 days a week from 11 am until 8 pm starting 4/27.

As you know, we are open for take-out and delivery of our pizzas and beer.  We don’t yet know when we will be able to resume full operations.  We know that the Governor has issued a Shelter In Place mandate through May 4 and we can only offer take-out or delivery until then.  We have very, very strict safety procedures in place to protect our employees and our customers.  These will remain in place and be required of anyone working in any capacity once they are rehired.  I assure you we want to ensure your health safety much more than we want to increase our business.

After reviewing the new “Reopening the Country” Phases proposed by President Trump, it is unclear whether a business such as ours will be able to have more than 10 people in one area in Phase 1, or more than 50 people in Phase 2 at any one time, but I believe we will.  First, we have plenty of outdoor seating, and I’ve been working on a plan to expand that seating to our lawn area (we’re removing our bocce court and placing some picnic tables there; and we’ll spread our outdoor furniture onto the game lawn).  We’re also going to ask the Town to allow us to place picnic tables in our wildflower meadow, and we will rope off that area with a bartender serving several of our beers in plastic cups from a kegerator that we would purchase.  It’s a beautiful space and would be a wonderful way to enjoy a delicious Bad Martha beer among all those flowers.  I’m hopeful the Town will approve our plan under these extenuating circumstances and in the aftermath of this crisis.  In this way, our customers can spread out in wide open outdoor spaces to maintain a social distance from one another.  We then would reduce seating indoors and have strict procedures about social distancing inside the brewery, on our porch, patio, lawn or in the wildflower meadow.  Our goal is to provide a safe and comfortable environment for all customers.

All of this is work in progress and subject to Town approval once we know more specifics from the Governor.  We look forward to the day we may resume full operations.  In the meantime, I’m deeply grateful to the Trump Administration, Congressional leaders and Martha’s Vineyard Bank for making the SBA loan available so we may rehire our employees and provide them with some financial relief. The Staff and I are also deeply appreciative of the kind words and actions of the customers that have supported our business this past month and want to extend a thank you to the entire community. The generosity has been uplifting.

It is my hope and prayer that you and your families remain safe, healthy and out of harm’s way during these challenging days.  I look forward to better times ahead, and seeing all of you Get Bad!

Warm regards, Jonathan
