The Boston Chapter of the Pink Boots Society, a national organization that highlights women’s roles in the beer industry, will celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD) this year by participating in a special collaboration brew day. Both groups, along with supporting breweries and other individuals, are joining in an effort to press for progress in gender parity. Some 24 Massachusetts breweries will participate in the national event on March 8th, including Trillium, Wormtown, Ipswich Ales, and Mayflower Brewing.

All 24 breweries taking part in the collaboration brew day will be led by prominent females in the industry, including several brewers. The styles and recipes of the celebratory brews will vary, but the common denominator is a special blend of hops that includes Palisade, Simcoe, Mosaic, Citra and Loral. The exclusive blend was chosen during the 2017 Great American Beer Festival in Denver, where Pink Boots members met with staff from YCH Hops, a 100% grower-owned supplier, to rub, smell and experience a selection of hop samples. The blend is described as “fruity but not overly tropical, with more dominant citrus and herbal notes.”

A portion of the proceeds from all beer sales at participating breweries will go back to PBS and be used to fund scholarships and other educational initiatives. Though most of the beer won’t be available until later this month or in early April, at least one will be pouring in time for IWD on the 8th. Night Shift Brewing’s production manager Anna Jobe led a group that brewed a Berliner Weisse style Ale called St. Hildegard that will be dry hopped with the exclusive blend and available in cans and on draft at the taproom.

Night Shift will release its Pink Boots Beer, St. Hildegard, at the taproom this Thursday. The event will celebrate International Women’s Day by offering full pours of the celebratory brew and 4-packs of tallgirl cans to go.

The other special brews, more than two dozen in all, will be featured at upcoming tap takeover events at Row 34 in Boston’s Seaport District, OAK Long Bar & Kitchen at the Fairmont Copley Plza, and Gulu-Gulu Cafe in Salem, who plans to have all 24 offerings on tap for their May 7th event.
