PRESS RELEASE / July 30, 2019 (Barnstable, MA) — On Wednesday August 7th, Barnstable Clean Water Coalition and Cape Cod Beer kick off a free monthly educational series at Cape Cod Beer called: Clean Water Wednesdays. This is a FREE event being held at Cape Cod Beer from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. The series currently has 4 scheduled talks:
August 7th: Cyanobacteria & Our Ponds
October 16th: Cranberry Bogs & their Impact
September 11th: Oysters and Shellfishing
November 13th: Sea Level Rise & Cape Cod

At the first Clean Water Wednesday on August 7th, Bryan Horsley from the Association to Preserve Cape Cod (APCC) will be the featured speaker. Bryan is APCC’s Restoration Technician and the Program Manager for the Cape Cod Cyanobacteria Monitoring Program. Bryan’s talk will cover basic ecology of cyanobacteria, associated environmental and human health threats, APCC’s Cape Cod Cyanobacteria Monitoring Program, and he will finish with an overview of actions that can be taken to help alleviate the problem.
Cyanobacteria has been a “hot topic” on Cape Cod this summer as several local towns, including the town of Barnstable have had beach closures and pet warnings due to cyanobacteria. A representative from the town of Barnstable will also be on hand to answer questions. .Experts for the later dates are being discussed currently. Cape Cod Beer and Barnstable Clean Water Coalition have partnered previously on events such as Race to the Pint and Shuck! A Day of Oysters & Beer (which returns for its 2nd year on October 5th.) Todd Marcus, President and Brewmaster, explains the connection between the two organizations: “Given that beer is 95% water, we have always cared very much about waterquality. No one ever really wants to talk about wastewater and water quality – it’s just not a sexy topic. But sometimes wehave to tackle those topics regardless – and Cape Cod is facing that time right now. We’re happy to work with our friends atBarnstable Clean Water Coalition to try to get people talking about water quality and what we as residents need to do about it”
As part of Clean Water Wednesdays, Cape Cod Beer is launching an environmental campaign where if you purchase a 20oz Clean Water Wednesdays Pint Glass and bring it back to the brewery on a Wednesday, you will receive a 20oz refill for the price of a 16oz. pour. $1 from every glass sold goes directly to Barnstable Clean Water Coalition. Cape Cod Beer will also be showing a Clean Water Wednesday Slide Show on Wednesdays each week for the next 4 months to encourage conservation, education and environmental advocacy. #CleanWaterMatters
