Bent Water 1st annual LKD F*ck Cancer Fundraiser
October 1, 2022 @ 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm
$251st Annual LKD F*CK Cancer Event to Benefit the Rare Cancer Research Foundation. LKD stands for Lawrence Keith Daum – who lost his battle to a rare cancer only 2 months after his diagnosis. As a group, rare cancers are the leading cause of cancer deaths in the US. The Rare Cancer Research Foundation (RCRF) [501(c)3 non-profit] work intends to advance efforts to develop new and better therapies to treat rare cancer patients. In the United States in 2014, nearly 400,000 rare cancer patients were diagnosed and 250,000 patients passed away, more than 7x the number of Americans who die in car accidents each year and a mortality rate radically higher than breast, prostate, or other common cancers. On a worldwide basis, these tragic numbers are in the millions. If RCRF’s work resulted in better outcomes for even 1% of rare cancer patients, this would represent tens of thousands of patients per year living either longer lives, achieving higher quality of life, or both. RCRF enables patient donations of excess tissue and fluid by coordinating collection, enhancement, and transfer to world-leading academic institutions like the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. These donations enable critical research such as genome sequencing, animal models, cell lines, and insights based on medical context. These efforts are accelerating the understanding of rare cancers and reducing the time to new & effective treatments. Any resulting models, as well as any associated de-identified data, is placed in the public domain and will be accessible to researchers worldwide to accelerate their scientific research.
All proceeds from this event will be donated to the Rare Cancer Research Foundation in loving memory of all of those who have passed from cancer.
